Working closely with Kingspan SBS, our LGSF engineering team completed RIBA stage 4 and 5 design for this 180 bedroom hub’by Premier Inn hotel. We delivered a complete engineering solution for the technical design to meet client requirements, whilst providing connection design to the hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel. The building is a 4-storey light gauge steel frame, with structural design also undertaken for a plant screen on the roof and hot-rolled elements.

The Solution

Full collaboration between the Design4Structures design team and the Kingspan SBS team ensued throughout the entire project workflow, including an in-depth kick-off meeting, scheduled weekly meetings and daily interactions. This holistic team approach ensured smooth delivery and the achievement of buildability factors during the design phase.

Using light gauge steel as the primary structural solution enabled greater flexibility in overcoming the range of complexities this project posed. These included a requirement for bolt-on horizontal banding on the structure, where a cantilevered support was designed along with producing a test panel to ensure buildability. Acoustics needed to be taken into consideration, so concrete was factored into the design and build of communal areas to ensure satisfactory outcomes.

  • Volume reduction of hot-rolled steel as previously specified by the engineer, with cold-rolled and bespoke details utilised as far as possible to increase build sustainability.
