A Strong Start to 2019

Supporting young, local talent is something we feel strongly about.

Supporting young, local talent is something we feel strongly about. Last year, we decided to put this into action by becoming an official sponsor for the girls’ section of our local rugby club, Welwyn R.F.C. We love hearing all about what they have been up to, and after the way they have been playing, we are extremely proud to be their sponsors.

Both the U15’s and U18’s have kicked off 2019 with some excellent wins. Despite the U18’s shaky start to the season back in December, they continued to improve and had an astounding win at Eton Manor where the final score was 62-12. Unfortunately, the first game of the year for the U13’s had to end early when one of their players was injured by a high tackle. However, up to that point they had played a strong game against a formidable opponent.

The U15’s and U18’s also travelled to Aylesford in Kent. Again the U18’s played superbly and, despite having a number of key girls unavailable, the rest of their players showed great teamwork and were able to come away with a win. The U15’s also played well, but Aylesford were just too skilled in the try scoring department. Meanwhile, the U13’s took part in a friendly mixed game and training session over at Datchworth, and enjoyed the opportunity to play and practice with other local teams.

Towards the end of the month, twelve of the U18 squad and 10 of the U15s also had the opportunity to take part in the County Trials at Cheshunt RFC. Although the conditions were cold, wet and windy, they all performed extremely well. Our fingers are crossed for all of those who took part, and we can’t wait to hear the results later this month.

Several of the U15 girls also had a very exciting and motivational start to the year. Donning their D4S hoodies, they took a trip to Allianz Park where they watched Saracens Women win against Harlequins Women. Afterwards, they also had the chance to meet four of Welwyn’s England capped players who now play for the Saracens. It was an absolute delight for them to meet such inspirational women, and knowing that they were once ex-Welwyn players has shown the girls that they also have the potential to achieve something great.

January was a great month all round for the Welwyn R.F.C., and every single player has shown excellent skill and potential. We wish them all the very best for the rest of 2019, and can’t wait to hear more about what they get up to!
