Home > Design4Structures receives ‘Offsite Innovation of The Year Award’ for One Sherwood Street, Piccadilly Circus

On the evening of 23rd of September 2022 over 350 guests from across the industry gathered at the London Construction Awards to watch the winners announced for twenty different categories.

Hosted by comedian Simon Brodkin, the event celebrated the achievements, developments and innovations of London’s construction industry over the past 12 months. It presents an opportunity to recognise and celebrate businesses and individuals that are making a positive contribution to the sector.

Having just reached our 6 year milestone, the team from Design4Structures are so proud to have been crowned winners in the ‘Offsite Innovation of the Year’ Award, for our work on the roof structure at One Sherwood Street, Piccadilly Circus. (Lucent W1) . We were also in attendance as finalists for the ‘Technical Innovation of The Year’ category for Collida’s Net Zero Homes project.

Managing Director Jonathon Lock, attended with the project team, including Associate and Project Lead Francesco Pisciotti. With a category of strong contenders, both were completely blown away by the win. As Jon says in the footage below “D4S is 6 years old, and now we work together as a unit for an award-winning company, its absolutely wonderful. So very proud.”

The Future of UK Construction?

Winning the award for offsite innovation, is the ultimate accolade for demonstrating to industry how the Design4Structures methodology can make a difference to; project timescales, reducing risk throughout the project, site safety and delivering within budget.

In 2016, we launched with just two engineers, now in 2022 we have built a 30-strong team of multidisciplinary engineers, along with a growing design and detailing division. Bringing engineering and detailing together in this way, enables us to take on a fully digitized front-end design delivery, handing over a complete manufacture and assembly package to our client.

Bringing Engineering, Design and Detailing ‘Under One Roof’

Working directly for the Main Contractor, Wates, the One Sherwood Street (Lucent W1) project demonstrates the enormous value our approach brings to our clients. With traditional engineering and construction off the table, the team needed to find a unique and innovative offsite solution towards the design of the geometrically complex roof structure.

This was achieved by literally having everything ‘under one roof’ – structural engineering, design and detailing of the frame, fabrication and lifting strategy, enabling the manufacture of roof modules in a factory before transporting to site.

Ultimately an estimated 16 weeks was saved in project delivery time. Our lifting strategy ensured minimal disruption to one of London’s busiest locations and project optimisation was estimated at 40%; zero non-conformance, zero site remedial works, zero site variations and zero site related injuries.

We were also really happy to have been shortlisted in the ‘Technical Innovation of The Year’ Category for our involvement with Collida’s Zero Carbon Homes.

As Collida’s structural design partners, we bring an MMC and offsite engineering specialism to the relationship. Our specific involvement in this project was to develop efficient and flexible structural solutions for low-rise houses and apartments, which will combine sustainable engineering and cutting-edge engineering, ultimately delivering Passivhaus certifiable, net zero carbon homes and apartments, which can be placed anywhere nationwide.
