Our team was tasked with delivering the modular design for a new educational building on the Leeds City College Printworks Campus. This state-of-the-art facility was created to accommodate a growing student population while respecting the heritage of the surrounding area. The original Printworks is a Grade II listed building, so it was crucial that the new design seamlessly blended with its surroundings without affecting the building’s protected status.
The site posed additional challenges, including remnants of old buildings that interfered with foundation work. It was also located in flood zone 2, requiring careful flood risk management. Another key factor was ensuring that both the college and the car park beneath the development remained operational throughout the construction process.
Our team worked closely with the design team to deliver RIBA stages 4 and 5, managing the full modular design, including the connection of the two-storey structure. The new Printworks building was designed to sit on a podium above the car park and existing teaching facilities, allowing these elements to remain active during construction.
The modular approach enabled us to manage the construction efficiently while keeping the site in use. By carefully planning the phased delivery of modular units and coordinating with the client, we ensured minimal disruption to ongoing activities at the college and surrounding facilities.
